Last week we had a visit from an injured Newcastle fan. She had fallen and hurt her leg on the way to the match, but not one of the Newcastle fans would stop to help her.
The only person willing to come to her assistance was a Sunderland fan called Mr Allstop, would you believe?
Of course our visitor was really Mrs McKeown, who was sharing a modern day version of the story of The Good Samaritan.
The football twist to the story really captured the children's attention, and they were astounded that the only person willing to help was a "mackem". It put the story in perspective for them, and put smiles on a lot of faces.

Year 3 helped Mrs Barnes deliver an assembly in the form of a quiz about different elements of Hindu life. Each child held up an answer while the rest of the key stage answered questions by finding the correct answer.

Year 2 have been learning about the story of Jonah in the bible. Rather than doing what God told him to do, he moaned, was swallowed by a big fish and spent 3 days in it's belly. Look at our Fab paper sculptures to depict the stormy sea into which Jonah was thrown.
We learned how to cut, rip, fold, twirl and roll the paper in creative ways.
We also learned that Christians should always do what God says because He knows best and has our best interests at heart. He had a plan for Jonah, who did not do as he was told! Our retelling of the jonah stories are brilliant. We used lots of WoW words and included loads of detail. come and read them on display!

Pastor Emmanuel from our Indian Orphanage has sent a thank you email for the massive £205 raised during Eco Week for our orphanage/school. It was sent over the summer holidays, along with £500 from Living Waters Church. Pastor Dave and Siman from LWC in South Shields are going to visit the orphanage in February.
The Indian Breakfast was a real success. Thank you to everyone who made it possible! We ate Indian fruit (mango, apple, strawberries and grapes). These treats would be reserved for rich indians. We also cooked and ate parantas (Indian pancakes) with mago jam or scrambled eggs. Yum Yum! Parents, Staff and children all enjoyed the experience and a DVD of our Indian children played in the background.

During the summer term 2010 as part of Eco Week, we took part in a creative curriculum theme about India. this was mainly to raise everyone's awareness of the problems faced by the country and the religious beliefs of the people. Sheila, Bethan and Nim (from Miss Allen's church) came to tell us about an Indian Orphanage we could support together.
Sheila left us with a selection of Indian desserts which were very sweet. We learned that the children in the orphanage in Machilipatnam did not have sweets like this. Most of them were orphans due to the Tsunami of 2005. Pastor Emmanuel (the principal of the school) is a Christian who has asked us to raise money for these children so a secondary school can be built. We learned that the only clean water they receive is between 6am and 7 am
Mrs Banergee taught us how to wear a sari. She taught us about the differences between schools in India compared to England.
Nick the chef came to work with Year 1 and 2 to make a biriyani. It was YUMMY!

This week we created a role play of Palm Sunday but we did it with a difference!
We were separated into three groups - costume designers, props and actors.
The costume designers were responsible for researching clothes that may have been worn in Jesus time using our Childrens Bible. They then had to dress the actors for their role.
The props people were responsible for making palm leaves, a donkey mask and tail.
The actors had to cast themselves into the role and then decide what they would say.
We had an amazing time and had to make so many decisions and choices. At first wefound this tricky but soon we were working as superb teams.
Our final play was amazing and we really enjoyed watching the actors perform the story of Palm Sunday.

Earlier this week Sheila Olsen visited every class in the school and discussed her faith. The children learned stories form the Bible and what it means to be a Christian. Sheila even used balloon modelling to help her tell stories and we got to keep the models she had made. We also had an assembly which taught us that the bible is full of good things, ask your child about the dog food!!!! It was really Mars bars and jelly!!! We also came together as a school to give thanks to God by singing 'Glory and Honour' with actions. Many thanks to Sheila and Katie form Living Waters Church.
We have also had a visit form Michael Glickman who discussed his faith with the school. The children learned about the Jewish faith and now know facts about how long Jewish children study and what they study, about the clothing Jewish people wear and why. Michael also gave presentations to Years 2 and 3, covering the Shabbat and the Jewish community in Gateshead! Many thanks to Michael Glickman!
The children have worked very hard and have completed lots of creative work on their chosen religion and it will be displayed in school soon!

Sheila and Katie came to see us today. They are from Miss Allen's church (Living Waters Church).
As part of Interfaith Week, Sheila and Katie came to talk to us about their faith. They visited all our classrooms and led a whole school assembly. Sheila made a banana appear from nowhere in a magic trick. She wanted us to eat dog food! Don't worry parents...it was only chopped up mars bars and jelly with a different label on. She told us that we should never judge people by their outward appearance!
We heard the story of Frd with the wobbly legs (the paralysed man story in the Bible) and asked Sheila questions about what she believed. What a fab day! She wants to come and visit again!

We made potato latkes, a Jewish savoury pancake eaten during the festival of Hanukkah!
We fried the pancakes in oil!
Then we ate them...YUM!!
Jewish people have a lot of fried food during Hanukkah. This reminds them of the oil in the Menorah (candlestick) which was only supposed to last one day but God let it last 8 days. Hanukkah cards show the message 'A great miracle happened there'!

This week, we are learning about Judaism. Michael Glickman, a Jewish man who lives in Gateshead came to visit our school. He spoke to Year 2 about the Torah.
We didn't know anything about the Torah at the beginning of the lesson. The Torah is the first 5 books of the bible. We found out that the books of the Torah is written on scrolls and they are kept in a cupboard in the synagogue. They can't be touched at all. People use a 'yad' to point to the words. This week we are going to find out loads of information about Judaism!

Year 3 - R.E. Communities in our local area

In R.E. we have been learning all about what a community is and what it’s like to be part of a community. We have spent a long time looking at different types of communities and what symbols are used to show people that they are a member of that community, such as a cross, school badge, football strip etc...

We then focused on one community the ‘Salvation Army’. The whole class thought this was the army and were shocked to see our visitor from the Salvation Army turn up in normal clothes rather than a camouflage uniform.

Year 3 really enjoyed the visit and asked lots of questions.

Year One visited St.Andrews Church yesterday to baptise their baby doll.
We had fantastic weather to walk to church yesterday. Mrs Inkster, Mrs cairns and Mrs Miller helped Year One celebrate the baptism of their baby doll Beth Ella. Year one have been learning all about new beginnings and belonging to the Christian church.
We watched a video of a baptism but we wanted to experience the real thing. Father Alan was kind enough to book us in for the real thing.
We chose our own vicar who was lucky enough to be dressed up for the occasion.
We all made promises to look after the baby and the parents and godparents went to the front of the church to make their promises to God.
The sign of the cross was made on Beth Ell’s head using some oil.
We then went to the back of the church where the font was located.
Father Alan showed us how to change Leam Lane tap water into holy water, by blessing it and making a cross in the water. A shell was then used to baptise the baby because a shell was used to baptise Jesus in the river Jordan. And so Beth Ella was given her name.
We then went back to the front of the church, where Ella’s parents were presented with a lighted candle from the vicar.
Then it was time for family and friends to have their photos taken with the special baby girl. First were the Godparents.
Next the doting Grandparents.
And finally the rest of the family who attended the special celebrations.
We said thank you to Father Alan and Mrs Inkster was able to press the button to ring the church bells. It was then back to school where we continued the celebrations with a party and enjoyed a lovely piece of christening cake.
Check out all of the photos from our visit in the gallery, Year One file.

The whole school took part in a wonderful Easter service on Thursday 20th. The children presented work on easter eggs, hot coss buns and acrostics. Year 6 examined the role of different people in Jesus' death. The singing was excellent and the parents thoroughly enjoyed it!

In our areas in the classroom we have been doing lots of different activities about Noah's Ark. Here we are playing in our Small World Area. We are retelling the story together.
Look out for our display which shows all the work we have been doing.

Father Alan met us at the church today. We were very excited and looking forward to learning lots about St. Andrews and what can be found in a church.
First Father Alan allowed us to walk around the church with our partners and talk about what we could see. Then we asked lots of questions like:
What were the blocks of wood on the wall?- 14 stations of the cross
What were candles around the church for? - some were lit for people who had prayed and others were for ceremonies.
We asked why the poppies were in a circle? - This was a wreath to remember the soldiers who had died for our country.
After question time and the chance to talk about the Bible and the stations of the cross, some of use were able to dress up in father Alan's clothes. Don't we look fantastic! We found out that father Alan wears a shirt and dog collar everyday, this is his uniform. On weddings and Christenings he wears a black cossack with a white tunic over the top. On Sundays he wears green, white for Christmas and Easter Sunday, red for Remberance day, and finally he wears purple for Good Friday and sad occassions.
We really enjoyed our visit and Father Alan says we are welcome any time. We look forward to seeing him again soon.
You can see our other photos in the gallery.

In R.E. we have been learning all about people who believe in God. They are called Christians. We spent a lot of time talking about how people who believe in God, belong to a family as well as learning about the special symbols they have, such as a cross and candle.
Finally we investigated a religous ceremony. Christians believe in naming their child in Church before God. We set up our classroom into the style of a church by making pews using our class chairs. We used a bowl of water for the special font and then selected our actors. We had two parents, four Godparents, four Grandparents, the vicar and most importantly the baby (who arrived from the Role Play area). The other children in the class acted as the congregation - it was an emotional occasion for some, who even cried (acting only)! The Reverend baptised the baby by pouring water on her head and marking the sign of the cross. Her parents then showed her off to everyone. The godparents were so proud to be chosen and also had a little cuddle.
Year 1 really enjoyed the lesson and talked about it for the rest of the afternoon. We are looking forward to visiting St. Andrews Church in a few weeks time, where we will get to see the real font. We hope you enjoy reading about how busy we have been. Please leave us a message if you have time.

The children are working hard to learn about Christianity and other religions.
Assemblies are taking place daily. The children learn how to live responsible and moral lives. As well as Christian worship the children have also been learning about Chinese New Year! Ask your child which animal represents the year 2006!
Harvest was another huge success! A big thank you for all your kind donations, the gifts were given to people in our local community, putting smiles on lots of faces.
The Nativity and Christmas carol service went exceptionally well and the children should be proud of themselves!
