As part of our England project, Year One took a trip back in time to see England in the past. Our visit to Beamish Museum was enthralling! The children were very excited but listened hard and learned so much. Many visitors and staff at the museum told us we were the best school they had ever had. Well done Year One and Year Two.

Nick from Cooking 4 Life was working with Year 5 as part of their Incredible Inventions theme. He showed the children ways in which food preparation and cookery has changed throughout history with a range of inventions.
The children looked at different ways of cutting food, starting with stone tools, and then building up to knives and graters. The children particularly enjoyed ...
The Egg Whisking Challenge. Four children raced to whisk an egg; one was using a fork, one a balloon whisk, one a manual hand whisk and one an electric whisk. This was an excellent way to demonstrate how inventions can make things easier to do. After all their hard work the children made omelettes, and surprised themselves with how much they liked them. Thanks once again to Nick for a brilliant day!

Year 5 and the ARMS went on a visit to St Mary's Heritage Centre and Betty Surtees House to learn about a Tudor Christmas.
The children had a fabulous time learning about toys and games which Tudor children would have played.
They also had the opportunity to compare the Tudor clothes of rich families and servants. They learned about traditional Tudor Christmas meals, and table manners. One of the rooms was decorated for Christmas in the traditional Tudor style, and the children had the opportunity to make their own pommander (a decoration made from an orange and cloves) before they returned to school.
The children had a lovely afternoon, and learned a lot. Their behaviour was exemplary, and they were fantastic ambassadors for the school. Well done!

Roman Road has just had the MOST amazing day today. This was a day that we will never forget and will remember even when we are old and wrinkly!
The Lions of Zululand were unbelievable.
What did you think? Please leave a comment.
Mdu and the Lions arrived early this morning and the hall quickly filled up with children eager to find out why all of the teachers had been so excited! - We were not disappointed.
We heard the singing and the a drum beat before the Lions suddenly burst up the stairs with their shields and knobsticks at the ready.
They began singing, dancing, entertaining and making us laugh for the next 45 minutes. Words and pictures cannot describe the amazing vibe in our school hall. We were left speechless and eager to work with the Lions of Zululand.
Throughout the day we all had the opportunity to learn how to sing and dance like the Zulus. Many of us also had the opportunity to learn about their culture and to draw some of their costumes, shields and spears. The teachers also got the opportunity to purchase African jewellery.
The day came to an end with the whole school showing what they had learned for the whole school. Even the staff demonstrated the dance we had all been taught. What a cheer they got.
Many, many thanks to Mdu and the Lions of Zululand you truly are AMAZING!

We made potato latkes, a Jewish savoury pancake eaten during the festival of Hanukkah!
We fried the pancakes in oil!
Then we ate them...YUM!!
Jewish people have a lot of fried food during Hanukkah. This reminds them of the oil in the Menorah (candlestick) which was only supposed to last one day but God let it last 8 days. Hanukkah cards show the message 'A great miracle happened there'!

In Year 3 this term we have been learning all about the Romans.
We learnt how Rome was created and re-enacted the Romulus and Remus story. We all enjoyed getting into character as you can see from the photos. We have also designed and made Roman catapults in Technology then had a competition of whose catapult would fire the furthest, which we all enjoyed. We are making Roman Helmets in Art but need a few more lessons before they are finished. We have loved learning new things for this topic. Miss Stubbs

We have been learning about The Great Fire of London in history. To show what we have found out we made a display in our classroom.
We all took part and made something to add to the display. In literacy we imagined that we were children in 1666 at the time of the fire and wrote about what it was like and what we saw.

This term in History we are learning about the Great Fire of London. To help us and make it interesting we have been using an interactive cd-rom which we used with the interactive white board. We are able to touch the interactive white board to find out about the people who were involved and what it was like when the fire happened in London. We take turns to answer questions and place captions and pictures in the correct places. We will be learning more about this important event from history over the next few weeks.

Come and have a look around our classroom and see what we have on display.
This is our toy shop and museum. We love playing in here, but what do we learn? We have made silhouettes of our favourite toys, used chalk to paint the other half of an old toy. We have set up our own toy museum and are learning how to use money in the shop. In ICt we took photographs of different toys close up. We have made a guessing game of what they toys are by lifting the flap. Finally, not forgetting science we are discovering how things move.
This is a photograph of our cloakroom. We turned it into a Winter Wonderland. Some of the work displayed includes adjectives that describe the cold, instructions how to make a snowman, glitter icicle spirals, and some great photos of us in the snow.
When we were learning all about time, we used the story What Time Is It Mr. Wolf and this was the focus of our display. We each made a clock by putting the numbers in the correct place and then adding an hour hand and minute hand. We also included some examples of the clocks we had completed in the lesson.
Our Winnie the Witch display shows us some examples of our writing. We had to write a sentence about Winnie the Witch. We were very proud of our work but can't believe how much we have improved since then.

This is our art area. It shows the work we did on colour mixing. We mixed the primary colours on a wheel and then added white to one colour to see what happened. We also thought of words that described colour.
We hope you have enjoyed having a little look around our classroom. We love it!

This is Christine. She is a very old doll. 56years old! She belongs to Mrs McLeod (Mrs Inkster's mum), who kindly brought her into school to talk to us about toys in the past.
Mrs McLeod got her doll when she was the same age as Year One children. She even had a photogrpah to show us of her playing outside her house with Christine. It was a black and white photograph.
We learnt that Christine was a very special doll. She was one of the first walking and talking dolls. If you tipped her up she said "Mama." Mrs Mcleod played with her lots as she wasn't as lucky as us, and only ever had one doll. She used to get her mum to make clothes and hats for her, but most of them are lost now.
We were very pleased to meet Christine as she helped us learn about toys 50 years ago. Next week we are visiting the Toy museum in Tynemouth where we will see toys even older. We can't wait.

Year one have been learning all about toys from the past and present
We have had great fun this afternoon, making kaleidoscopes and buliding toys that have to move around a maze.
This is really helping develop our ICT skills. We are having to click, drag and drop as well as follow on screen instructions. In Build a Toy we are having to give our toy control commands to beat the bad toy and stop it from draining our power.

Did you know Mrs Miller went to Roman Road Primary school when she was little? She visited Year One this week to talk to us all about her time at Roman Road primary school.
We have been learning all about schools in the past. We thought of three questions each we would ask Mrs Miller. We wrote them down and even used question marks. On Tuesday after lunch Mrs Miller came to visit.
We were all ready with our questions. She was very impressed with them. Some of the questions we asked were:
1 Did you ever get the cane?
2 Did you have a register?
3 What were your teachers called?
4 Did you use paper towels?
5 Did you write on chalk boards?
6 What did you play with?
7 Did you do Read Write Inc?
8 Did you do swimming lessons on the floor?
9 What did you wear?
10 What lessons did you like?
Mrs Miller answered all of our questions. Then she showed us some of the games she played at school. They were:
Cannonball
Pick up sticks
Chucks
Spinning Top
2 and 3 Baller
Lacky Bands
We are getting so good at knowing all about schools in the past and hopefully we will learn a little more about them in the Summer when we go on a school trip.

In Year One we are studying schools for our history topic. In this picture we had great fun playing marbles. It was much harder than it looked to get close to the jack.
We have been looking at how schools have changed. We have looked at the uniforms the children wore, what the lessons were like and the terrible punishments the children received if they were naughty.
This afternoon we went outside and played some playground games from the past. These also included Mrs Inkster, Mrs Cairns and Mrs Dunn's favourite games from when they were little.
In this photograph the girls are enjoying skipping and chanting rhymes at the same time. Mrs Cairns loved to skip and she even gave us a demonstration.
Some of the children enjoyed trying to roll the hoops around the yard. We have plastic hoops but they used to be made of metal or wood.
Mrs Inkster's favourite games was elastic bands or "lacky bands". She showed us how to tie them together and then we played games with them. You had to jump really high.
Mrs Dunn showed us al how to play cats cradle. We found it extremely tricky but with a little help some of us managed to do the first one.
We had a great afternoon and look forward to finding even more interesting facts about schools in the past.

In Foundation Stage we have been learning about why we celebrate Bonfire Night and what Fireworks represent! It is from an event long ago.
Most of us saw some fireworks this year. In class, we made pretty pictures using soft pastels and black sugar paper.
Whizz! Bang! Pop! Screech! Zoom! Whee! Spin! Explode!

Year 6 visited Beamish Museum and had a Victorian experience to remember.
We have been studying the Victorians over the Autumn term and visited Beamish Museum to really get to grips with this era. We were really interested in finding facts on the internet about Queen Victoria and wrote biographies for our display in the classroom. We have also made Victorian Waterwheels in Technology and have really enjoyed using the saws and other resources to produce the models. We have loved learning new things for this topic

The children in the Mainstream Support Base enjoyed a visit from a Roman lady.
On Monday 15th October the children enjoyed a visit from a Roman lady. She talked to the children about life in Roman times and dressed up two of the children in Roman costume. One of the children dressed up as a Roman soldier but the armour was very heavy. She demonstrated weaving and they enjoyed having a go! The children thoroughly enjoyed it and were very interested in the artifacts which they touched and handled.
