Indian Breakfast

P9280329.JPG
A BIG thank you to staff, children, parents and visitors who raised £250 for our Indian orphanage yesterday (Friday 14th January). The day was a massive success!

P9280333.JPG
Visitors included parents, who came for their second authentic Indian breakfast which included paranthas (pancakes) and mango jam, fruit and scrambled egg.
An artist worked with children from Year 1 to Year 6 making rangoli patterns. These are Indian floor patterns used as a welcome to Hindu gods in the Indian Culture.
Mrs Robson, our Eco Governor visited for the day and worked with the artist as well as visiting all classes!
Foundation Stage children had another visit from Sheila from Miss Allen's church who told an Indian story and painted faces and hands with tigers and mendhi patterns.
Sheila also led a whole school assembly and used balloon modelling to tell the Christian story of Creation and perform a magic trick to tell us that God loves us all equally. We saw pictures of the Indian orphans whose parents were the victims of the 2004 tsunami.
The £250 raised will be taken to India in February by 4 members of Miss Allen's church and it will be used to buy school supplies. Money raised by Living Waters Church will go towards the building fund for Pastor Emmanuel's secondary school in Malakapatnam in India!

Thank you again for your generosity!
Miss Allen

WOW!!! INCREDIBLE!!! AMAZING!!!! OUTSTANDING!!!

P5070209.JPG

Roman Road has just had the MOST amazing day today. This was a day that we will never forget and will remember even when we are old and wrinkly!

The Lions of Zululand were unbelievable.

What did you think? Please leave a comment.

Mdu and the Lions arrived early this morning and the hall quickly filled up with children eager to find out why all of the teachers had been so excited! - We were not disappointed.

We heard the singing and the a drum beat before the Lions suddenly burst up the stairs with their shields and knobsticks at the ready.

They began singing, dancing, entertaining and making us laugh for the next 45 minutes. Words and pictures cannot describe the amazing vibe in our school hall. We were left speechless and eager to work with the Lions of Zululand.

Throughout the day we all had the opportunity to learn how to sing and dance like the Zulus. Many of us also had the opportunity to learn about their culture and to draw some of their costumes, shields and spears. The teachers also got the opportunity to purchase African jewellery.

The day came to an end with the whole school showing what they had learned for the whole school. Even the staff demonstrated the dance we had all been taught. What a cheer they got.

Many, many thanks to Mdu and the Lions of Zululand you truly are AMAZING!

Year 2 Assembly - Parents!

We had a gift for all of the parents. We made a French painting (inspired by Claude Monet) and a bookmark. We also gave the parents a taste of France - a crepe (pancake) and cakes with home-made french flags.
P1010576.JPG
All of them enjoyed our gift and the assembly went really well.

P1010574.JPG
After the success of the assembly, we all said goodbye to parents and they congratulated us!

Souter Lighthouse and Marsden

Our class went on an educational visit to Souter Lighthouse.

IMG_0337a.JPG

We arrived early, so we went for a walk along the cliff and had time to play on the play equipment until the lighthouse opened at 11am. When we went inside the lighthouse the guide took us up to top. There were lots of stairs that curved around the side of the lighthouse. The last set of steps leading up to the light were very steep, like a set of ladders. We looked out of the windows. It was a bit foggy so we couldn't see very far. After that we went downstairs to the engine room where we saw the compressors and othe equipment that is used to make the light and foghorn work. We then went to see the lighthouse keepers cottage from 100 years ago. There was a kitchen, a childrens bedroom and an adults bedroom. It was very interesting. It was then lunchtime so we sat in the picnic area to eat. After lunch we went to Marsden. We played on the sand and went rock pooling. We caught some crabs. We had a great day and would like to return another day.

Year 3 Find Changes!

In Year 3 this term our Geography topic is 'Changes in our local area'.

P4170174a.JPG

We talked about different types of changes that could take place and where we could find out more. We asked Mrs Pigott, who has lived on Leam Lane since she was a little girl to take us on a walk around the area and share with us the changes she has noticed over the years.

We found changes that had happened within a week! The first change was within our school, we had just had a new bike shed fitted. We also found another recent change just outside the school, a block of flats had been knocked down the week before we went on the walk!

RECYCLE ROBOT

P9090017.JPG

We have been sorting, organising and recycling materials in year one.

The whole school have focussed on the environment this term and we have been particularly looking at recycling materials.

We named and sorted materials. We have discussed whether they are natural or man-made. Are they dull or shiny? Magnetic or non-magnetic?

We have also looked at the importance of recyling materials.

Did you know it takes at least 300 years for a plastic bottle to degrade? This means lots of our rubbish in landfill sites will be there for hundreds of years.

To remind us all about the importance of recycling, year one made a robot out of recycled rubbish. We have displayed it in the key Stage One hall along with our own individual robots. We looked very carefully at the materials and decided which were most suitable.

Please help year one and RECYCLE YOUR RUBBISH!

Traffic Survey

traffic%20count.JPG

Year 1 have carried out a traffic survey.

www.hedgehogs.gov.uk

In Year One this half term our Geography topic is road safety. In class we have been talking about the importance of staying safe near roads. We decided we needed to know how to tell if a road was busy. We compiled our ideas which were looking at the road, listening to the noise of the traffic and finally by counting how many cars were on it. We used a carefully designed chart to record any cars, buses, bikes, vans, lorries and motorcycles that passed. In partners one person took the role of observer (looker) whilst the other recorded the findings (ticker). We really enjoyed counting the traffic and we made a graph of what we found.

Find out more information and play road safety games by clicking on the link.

Around the World with Barnaby Bear.

This term Year 2 have been looking at a different country each week as Barnaby Bear has been on his travels. We have tasted garlic bread from Italy; bagels and pretzels from America; and prawn crackers from China. Every week we stick a bear on the map of the World to show where Barnaby is, and to think about how he might have travelled there. We looked at the flags of all the African countries, and designed some of our own. We used Word to type up what we found out about America, and added clip art to make our work more interesting to our readers. Why not come to our classroom and see where Barnaby is going next ?
