We love Gymnastics in Year 2
This half term we are using the gymnastic equipment...and loving it!
We love PE! This half term we are using the gymnastic equipment. Sometimes it's scary (especially on the tall climbing frame) but it's always fun. We know how to balance on the horse and travel across the equipment in creative ways. Parents please remember that PE is on Mondays and Thursdays and children will need full kit. Thank you.

North East Artsmark Celebration 2008
Yestrday, July 3rd 2008, two children from Key Stage 1 were proud to accept Roman Road's Silver Artsmark Award.
The celebration of Artsmark took place at Northern Stage in Newcastle and was attended by two Key Stage One children, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Inkster. The event was hosted by a comedian (who was very funny), presentations from schools who had achieved Gold and Silver Artsmark last year and finally over 80 schools who were there to collect their prestigious award.
We are extremely proud of our schools achievements and couldn't wait to collect our award and goody bag. This award shows that Roman Road is commited to providing our pupils with a range of creative experiences.
Many thanks to the two children who were extremely well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon out of school. Congratulations to all pupils and staff who have worked extremely hard to achieve this award.

Gateshead Athletics Festival 2008
We arrived at school on June 27th at 8.30am all kitted out and ready to go to Gateshead International Stadium, home of the 10th Schools Athletics festival. How did we do?
A selection of children from Year 3 -6 had taken part in trials across the month in school and were then chosen to represent Roman Road at the festival. We particpated in a huge number of events from sprints, skipping, relays, long jump, javelin, cricket ball throw and many more.
All of the children who participated were incredible! They had a fantastic team spirit and represented our school superbly both on and off the track.
We were able to secure a semi final place in all of our races: sprint, skipping and relays. With all of the children giving 100% effort. We went on to have three opportunities in the finals - Year 5/6 Boys skipping, Year 5/6 Boys 80m Sprint and finally the Year 5/6 Boys Relay.
David Kippen represented the school in all three events and was an amazing team captain. He was just pipped to a medal in the skipping. By the time the final race of the day approached we were all extremely nervous.
The relay started with a fantastic first leg by Josh Archibald who powered down the track, Liam McDonald had a great baton change and held our position well, Jamie McKeown roared down the track gaining ground all of the time and had a clean baton change to David Kippen who never gave up and was determined that our day would end with a medal.
It did! The boys brought home a silver medal for Roman Road. Fantastic!
By the end of the day Mr. Allsop was sunburnt, Mrs Inkster and Mrs Rushton had lost their voices and Mr Bradshaw was floating with delight at the results.
Congratulations to all of the children that took part you were amazing and a credit to our school.

Great Whithaugh Week Enjoyed by Year 6

Year 6 have just returned from an enjoyable week at Whithaugh Park.
You can see the first lot of photos in the gallery section of this site.
After beating a slow journey up to the site, the rainy weather and of course the midgies, year 6 took took part in lots of activities on the land (and under it), in the water and in the air with the famous parachute drop from the climbing tower.
Miss Allen didn't get lost on the orienteering - a first !!!
More children took part in activities than ever before and the year group were great at eating the excellent food served by Steve and his staff from Copshaw Kitchen in the village.
We even held our own disco in which the classic 'Don't Go Breaking my Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee was danced to by boy and girl partners. Look out for future photos to come - especially from the bride and groom competition.

Line Dancing Festival
Children from Roman Road Primary School participated in Gateshead's Line Dancing Festival last night.
The children and parents thoroughly enjoyed the event, with everyone taking part and 'having a go', parents included! Children from Year 3, 4 and 5 represented the school and their behaviour was exceptional, they are a credit to our school.
We look forward to participating in next year with a view to having our own dance to present to the audience.
Many thanks to Miss Ternent, Miss Stubbs and Mrs Lacey for all their hard work in teaching the children the dances.
Photos to follow soon

Super Six for School Football Team
Last night, the school team played Falla Park at home in a league match. Even though the pitch conditions were difficult, the team ended the match with an excellent 6-1 win.
Josh Archibald continued his excellent scoring run with another four goals, making his haul ten in the last three matches. The other two were scored by Andrew Oliver whose strength was a problem for the spirited hardworking Falla team all match.
It was pleasing that the team varied the style of play due to the long grass and scored three headed goals as well as being unlucky when a header from Joe Hunter did not properly cross the line.

Gateshead Dance Festival
A selection of children from year 5 and 6 amazed the audience with their rendition of What Time Is It? from High School Musical.
We arrived at Gateshead leisure centre at approximately 5.15pm where we eagerly awaited our turn in the 2008 Gateshead Dance Festival.
We were fourth on the dance floor and soon got the audience clapping and stomping their feet as we danced. We were all in time and gave maximum effort. Mrs Inkster and Miss Ternent were so proud of us after all of the hard work we had put in.
As soon as the girls split and let the audience see the boys with their basketballs the audience went wild! We received an amazing applause at the end.
We thoroughly enjoyed watching the other schools participate and were are very determined to be part of it again next year. Perhaps we might even bring some of Key Stage One along as they definitely get the audience attention with the "aah" factor.
Well done to everyone involved - your were FABULOUS!

Year 6 have started on their Rowing Challenge!!!
Forget the Olynpics or the Boat Race, our children had introductory session with Mr Tellyn from Heworth Grange on how to use their impressive rowing machines.
Over the coming months, they will take part in challenges which will be entered on to computer. From this, league tables from different schools will be drawn up thus making it a real challenge.
The children really enjoyed their first event. It was exhausting but they can't wait for next month and a new challenge.
