Today we have been exploring how the Ancient Egyptians made pyramids. Unfortunately Mrs Inkster does not have the muscle to transport lots of stone into school so we relied on rough cut sugar cubes instead.
We found that if we built up each section of the pyramid using squares and then layered them on top of each other it made quite an effective sugar pyramid. Anyone for coffee???

As well as our stories about Jack and the Beanstalk, we have been growing broad beans. Miss Allen challenged us to 2 competitions. Whao could write the best instructions for 'How to grow a bean' and who could grow the tallest beanstalk.
Alisha and Liam grew the tallest beanstalks for the girls and boys.
Bethany and Haydn wrote the best instructions.
We measured our beanstalks using a tape measure. We can measure really well now using cm.

We have been learning all about measuring lengths. We can compare, measure using different units and find the difference.
Can you estimate how long something is and then measure it - we can!

When we visited Raby Castle we saw some stained glass windows. After we returned to school we created some of our own.
First we got an OHP / acetate sheet.
We then tore up pieces of tissue or cut cellophane.
Next we glued this to the acetate sheet.
We made sure there were no spaces between the colours.
After that we glued over the top to make a varnish and to stick down all of the edges.
Then we had also been learning about different 2D shapes in numeracy, so we chose from a selection of shapes the frame we would like for the window.
Finally we glued these together and displayed them on our corridor windows.
They look fantastic!

In Year One we have been learning how to estimate and then check how close we were by counting.
Here we are working with our partners. In our class we don't have partner 1 and 2 - we have Ant and Dec as they make such a good team.
In this activity we were selecting cubes, estimating how many and then counting. At first we were not very close but the more we practised the better we got! Now we are Estimating Experts!

How fantastic are our Mothers Day Presents! Wondering if we really made them all by ourself? Check out how we did it.
We knew we wanted to make our frames a square shape. We know that squares have four sides the same length. So we decide a good size would be 14cm. Next we had to measure 14cm on our piece of wood, four times for each length.
We then clamped our piece of wood in the vice and very carefully began sawing the wood, making sure our fingers were well out of the way. Mrs Inkster was very worried she would be sending someone home with 9 fingers, but we were extremely careful and followed the instructions well.
Then we used sand paper to get rid of any rough edges. After this we had help from Mr Slane and his class who used the glue guns to stick our picture frames into the shape of a square. The glue gun meant the frame was strong and the glue dried very quickly.
We then added a card back and a photograph of ourselves to make our Mum's day extra special. We decided that a good finishing touch would be to add crepe paper around the edges. This was very tricky but we all perservered and did an excellent job.
Also we added a heart with a message to our Mums on the back. Finally we drilled a hole in the frame and added a piece o dowelling so our frames stood up.
Then it was time to take them home and find a place to hide them until Mothers day. The response from our Mums' was brill! We are very proud of what we managed to achieve and we are still only 5 and 6... future carpenters in the making!

In Numeracy we have been using questions to collect data. This photo shows some examples of our work. Can you guess what the questions were?
We used the information we collected to give us facts. We then turned it into bar charts in the ICT suite. We were very impressed wih how well we could use this information to asnswer further questions.

After some said that they didn't like porridge, I think making it and tasting it may have helped the children to develop a taste for it. The children weighed the oats and measured the milk and mixed them together. Safety was a discussion point as the mixture was heated in a pan and changes in the mixture were noticed as it came to boiling point. The children sat together as a group to eat their bowl of porridge and afterwards they washed the dishes and left the kitchen clean and tidy.

Come and have a look around our classroom and see what we have on display.
This is our toy shop and museum. We love playing in here, but what do we learn? We have made silhouettes of our favourite toys, used chalk to paint the other half of an old toy. We have set up our own toy museum and are learning how to use money in the shop. In ICt we took photographs of different toys close up. We have made a guessing game of what they toys are by lifting the flap. Finally, not forgetting science we are discovering how things move.
This is a photograph of our cloakroom. We turned it into a Winter Wonderland. Some of the work displayed includes adjectives that describe the cold, instructions how to make a snowman, glitter icicle spirals, and some great photos of us in the snow.
When we were learning all about time, we used the story What Time Is It Mr. Wolf and this was the focus of our display. We each made a clock by putting the numbers in the correct place and then adding an hour hand and minute hand. We also included some examples of the clocks we had completed in the lesson.
Our Winnie the Witch display shows us some examples of our writing. We had to write a sentence about Winnie the Witch. We were very proud of our work but can't believe how much we have improved since then.

This is our art area. It shows the work we did on colour mixing. We mixed the primary colours on a wheel and then added white to one colour to see what happened. We also thought of words that described colour.
We hope you have enjoyed having a little look around our classroom. We love it!

In Year 2 we are learning about Hundreds, Tens and Units
Place value is all about reading, writing and adding numbers. We are beginning to understand that a number like 234 is made up out of 200 30 4.
Last week for homework, Miss Allen sent us a 100 square to complete and we have been playing games on the interactive whiteboard. We are really good at finding numbers quickly using a blank 100 square. This week, we will be learning how to add 9 really quickly. Do you know how to do it? (Here's a tip: Add 10 then take away 1)

This week in Year One we have been looking at symmetry. It is a very hard subject but Mrs Inkster thinks we are fantastic at it.
First we began by taking lots of paper squares and rectangles. We experimented by folding the paper in half lots of different ways. When we had folded it, we opened it up and drew a line down the fold. Then, with our partners we looked very carefully and asked two questions:
1. Were they the same size?
2. Were they the same shape?
If they were this means that they were symmetrical.
We then used lots of other different shapes to see if they were symmetrical. We found that some shapes had lots of lines of symmetry but others didn't have any.
We extended this work by painting and cutting symmetrical pictures. We folded our paper in half and then painted on one side of the paper. Folded the paper again and pressed hard so the image would print. This created a symmetrical picture.
More tricky was cutting a symmetrical picture. Again we had to fold the paper in half and then remember to cut through both sheets of paper at the same time. Some of us created lots of confetti at first but then we soon got the hang of it.
We are now officially experts on symmetrical shapes and pictures.

We have recently been looking at multiplication, division and fractions, in maths.
Starting in last half term with Miss Allen, and continuing with Mr Ball, we have done a lot of work on multiplication and division. Using blocks and white boards to help us, we were able to calculate problems like, 2 x 12 = and 12 / 2 = . We were then relating them to doubling and halving, using the 2 times table. Fractions were a bit more difficult to do, we started with finding 1/2 and 1/4 of shapes, which was ok, but finding 1/2 and 1/4 of numbers proved a little more difficult until we realised it was like dividing by 2 or 4.

It's about time!
Year 2 have been learning about time.
We have loved learning about the 12 hour clock and using the interactive whiteboard to help us tell the time. We can tell the time using o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to! Cory was one of our maths kings this week... his work was fantastic! WoW!
Miss Allen said... "I think it's brilliant! My class are fab and we are lovin' maths!"

Today we have been using some exciting equipment to help us count in tens and ones.
We have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones. First we thought about how many tens there were and then how many ones. This means that twelve has 1 ten and 2 ones. Then we used base equipment to show the correct amount.
It was tricky at first because we all kept saying we didn't have enough ones. Thankfully Shannon knew how to do it and she showed us how to work it out. After that we were great and could even partition 59 and then show it with our base.
We are really trying hard in Year One.

This week we have ben learning all about doubling.
In class we have been finding lots of ways to remember double numbers. Red and blue group used cubed and then recorded their findings on a sheet. Green and yellow group used dominoes, they then recorded their answers. Envoys from each group moved to another group nd checked to see if their findings were the same. We are getting really good at envoying and checking each other's work.

This week we have been comparing and measuring lengths in Year One. We used string and our feet to compare the length of different objects we found in the classroom.
Red group used a piece of string to measure objects around the classroom. They found an object that was shorter, longer and 'roughly' the same size.
Green group drew around their feet and then compared them to the rest of the children on their table. They found out who had the longest and shortest foot and were able to order them.
Blue group had three strings of different length, they measured them and then ordered from longest to shortest.
Yellow group drew pictures making sure they had thought about the size. For example they drew a house that was larger than a boy and 3 snakes of different lengths.
We are getting really good at measuring!

Year 1 have been describing and sorting 3D shapes. In pairs we described the shapes by looking at how many edges, corners and faces there were as well as the shape of the faces. We worked brilliantly together and were even able to sort our shapes and explain why we had sorted them in this way.

The Money Monster
There is nothing scary about our Money Monster, just like there's nothing scary about money! Why don't you do some money work at home?

Money Monster
In Year 2 one of our targets is to be able to work with money. We have a money monster in our classroom and we can buy items from him. We tick the items we want and pay the money monster. Some of us are beginning to learn about using pounds. Do you know how many pence are in one pound?

Magic Maths
In Year 2 we have a Magic Dragon called Denzel who writes to us. He travels around the world visiting various places. He even knows where Santa Claus lives. Denzel told us that he lives in a place called Magic Island. We used our own Magic Island maps and plotted the places that Denzel told us about on the map. We remember how to plot co-ordinates by 'going along the corridor and up the stairs'. Do you like Numeracy?

Times tables knowledge is extremely important. They are used in many topics of Maths and have practical uses in other subjects. It is really important to have a secure and quick recall of tables both as multiplication (7 x 6 = 42) and as division (42 divided by 7 = 6 and 42 divided by 6 = 7)
The link below is a good site for helping you improve. It is from the same people that wrote Primary Maths Games which the children use on the Interactive Whiteboards in school.
