It's A Jungle in Key Stage One

PA020036.JPG

We are really lucky to have a freelance artist working in our school on a Thursday.

Lynda Nelson an artist and book illustrator came into school a few weeks ago to talk to Key Stage One about brightening up their building. We looked at lots of different photos and themes and eventually decided on a jungle.

Over the next few weeks Lynda will be working in our school. We will try and update the website regularly so you can see how it progresses.

Check out our artists websitehttp://www.lynda-nelson.co.uk/

North East Artsmark Celebration 2008

artsmark%20award.JPG

Yestrday, July 3rd 2008, two children from Key Stage 1 were proud to accept Roman Road's Silver Artsmark Award.

artsmark%202.JPG

The celebration of Artsmark took place at Northern Stage in Newcastle and was attended by two Key Stage One children, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Inkster. The event was hosted by a comedian (who was very funny), presentations from schools who had achieved Gold and Silver Artsmark last year and finally over 80 schools who were there to collect their prestigious award.

We are extremely proud of our schools achievements and couldn't wait to collect our award and goody bag. This award shows that Roman Road is commited to providing our pupils with a range of creative experiences.

Many thanks to the two children who were extremely well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon out of school. Congratulations to all pupils and staff who have worked extremely hard to achieve this award.

Weaving

Look at our weaving! We have been learning all about different materials and how they can be used in art.

weaving%20work.JPG

We started by looking very carefully at pieces of fabric with a magnifying glass. We could see that the material had lines going down as well as across. We experimented with the techniques of weaving using sugar paper.

pm%20weaving.JPG

Mrs Inkster told us this was called the weft and the warp. We got a weaving board and made the warp with wool.

We were then given lots of different pieces of fabric to use in our weaving. We had to carefully measue our lengths so that they were longer than the board. Then we got going with our designs. It was tricky to remember if we had to go over and under, or under and over. But we got there in the end with lots of help from our partners.

We will hopefully be showing our work around school. Come and have a look.

Computer Art in Year 4

Year 4 have been very busy using Fresco to draw pictures of houses. They have used stamps, airbrush tools and symmetry to create their pictures.

Connor%202.jpg

All the pictures can be found in the Key Stage 2 section of the Gallery from the link at the top of the home page or in Mr A's classroom.

There were some really good examples of pictures that used the stamp tool to create texture for trees, bricks, the sky and grass.

Fireworks!

In Foundation Stage we have been learning about why we celebrate Bonfire Night and what Fireworks represent! It is from an event long ago.

Most of us saw some fireworks this year. In class, we made pretty pictures using soft pastels and black sugar paper.

Whizz! Bang! Pop! Screech! Zoom! Whee! Spin! Explode!

Foundation Stage

In a dark dark town there was a dark dark house. In the dark dark house there was a dark dark cellar. In the dark dark cellar some skeletons lived. . .

We have been doing lots of activities based on the story 'Funny Bones' by Janet and Alan Albergh. In our gluing area we fastened bones together to make some scary skeletons!
We painted the big skeleton in our art area and in ICT we made pictures on 'Fresco' of the characters. In the Reception classroom we are making a big 'Funny Bones' display. Come and have a look! If you dare to, you could come inside our 'Dark dark cellar' too! Don't be scared!

Art presentation

Today Year 5 have enjoyed an Art Presentation by Pippa Bell from the Magic Lantern.

Year 5 learnt all about animals in paintings. They looked at a variety of slides and discussed what they could see. The children were very enthusiastic and asked lots of questions. Pippa was very impressed. As the class topic is Jungles, the children will be using what they have learnt, in creating their own Jungle picture this half term.

Art Presentation

Presentation on pattern

On Thursday 1st November the children listenend to an art presentation by Pippa Bell from the National Gallery. The presentation was all about pattern. She showed the children different paintings and asked them to look for the patterns within the painting. She couldn't believe how enthusiastic the children were and how many great ideas they had. The presentation lasted just over an hour and the children gained many good ideas for future art work.

Talented Artists at Roman Road

The school have recently completed a drawing task involving every child from Nursery up to Year 6. We all produced an observational drawing of a Cello. The results are very pleasing and show good progression from Foundation Stage to upper Key Stage 2. Look out for the wonderful display when you visit Roman Road.
