Our last day in Year One. We were all very sad to be leaving Year One and Mrs Inkster was very sad to see us leave. But we decided it was time to have some fun. So we set to work chocolate painting. It was messy! It was sticky! It was scrumptious and fun!!!!!!!!!

First we used the chocolate to paint pictures or hand prints. Then when mrs Inkster said we went wild! We were able to lick our fingers and enjoy the chocolate. We loved it! We are sure you can tell how much fun we had by the pictures. More pictures will be uploaded into the Year One Gallery when the chocolate sets.

Apologies to our Mums and Dads for any chocolate on our uniform - but mucky kids are happy kids and chocolaty kids are just fantastic.

Thank you to all of the children and parents for making this a great year.

Mrs Inkster

The celebration of Artsmark took place at Northern Stage in Newcastle and was attended by two Key Stage One children, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Inkster. The event was hosted by a comedian (who was very funny), presentations from schools who had achieved Gold and Silver Artsmark last year and finally over 80 schools who were there to collect their prestigious award.

We are extremely proud of our schools achievements and couldn't wait to collect our award and goody bag. This award shows that Roman Road is commited to providing our pupils with a range of creative experiences.

Many thanks to the two children who were extremely well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon out of school. Congratulations to all pupils and staff who have worked extremely hard to achieve this award.

We arrived at school on June 27th at 8.30am all kitted out and ready to go to Gateshead International Stadium, home of the 10th Schools Athletics festival. How did we do?
A selection of children from Year 3 -6 had taken part in trials across the month in school and were then chosen to represent Roman Road at the festival. We particpated in a huge number of events from sprints, skipping, relays, long jump, javelin, cricket ball throw and many more.

All of the children who participated were incredible! They had a fantastic team spirit and represented our school superbly both on and off the track.

We were able to secure a semi final place in all of our races: sprint, skipping and relays. With all of the children giving 100% effort. We went on to have three opportunities in the finals - Year 5/6 Boys skipping, Year 5/6 Boys 80m Sprint and finally the Year 5/6 Boys Relay.

David Kippen represented the school in all three events and was an amazing team captain. He was just pipped to a medal in the skipping. By the time the final race of the day approached we were all extremely nervous.

The relay started with a fantastic first leg by Josh Archibald who powered down the track, Liam McDonald had a great baton change and held our position well, Jamie McKeown roared down the track gaining ground all of the time and had a clean baton change to David Kippen who never gave up and was determined that our day would end with a medal.

It did! The boys brought home a silver medal for Roman Road. Fantastic!

By the end of the day Mr. Allsop was sunburnt, Mrs Inkster and Mrs Rushton had lost their voices and Mr Bradshaw was floating with delight at the results.

Congratulations to all of the children that took part you were amazing and a credit to our school.

Year 6 have just returned from an enjoyable week at Whithaugh Park.
You can see the first lot of photos in the gallery section of this site.
After beating a slow journey up to the site, the rainy weather and of course the midgies, year 6 took took part in lots of activities on the land (and under it), in the water and in the air with the famous parachute drop from the climbing tower.
Miss Allen didn't get lost on the orienteering - a first !!!
More children took part in activities than ever before and the year group were great at eating the excellent food served by Steve and his staff from Copshaw Kitchen in the village.
We even held our own disco in which the classic 'Don't Go Breaking my Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee was danced to by boy and girl partners. Look out for future photos to come - especially from the bride and groom competition.

We were delighted to be informed by letter last week that we had been successful in our award for Artsmark. All staff and children had worked hard towards achieving the Silver award but we have had to wait six months to see if we were successful.
Artsmark provides a benchmark for arts provision and encourages schools to consider the opportunities they offer in art, dance, drama and music. Artsmark Silver is the middle level of achievement a school can attain by completing all compulsory sections of the application form and the optional requirements for Silver. Each application goes through a rigorous five-step assessment process to ensure that the criteria for Artsmark have been met.

Schools evaluate provision against the benchmark to identify any areas for development and to highlight the school’s strengths in the arts.

Gaining an Artsmark at any level shows that our school is committed to the wider development of young people. The scheme increases the status of the work of teachers within school and increases awareness of continuing professional development opportunities in the arts for all teachers.

By offering public recognition of commitment to the arts by the school and its teachers, Artsmark raises the profile of the school and its arts provision in the local community. Mrs Barnes and Mrs Inkster who worked towards our achieving this award, will be attending a celebration and presentation in July, accompanied by two children from the school. We are extrememly proud of our acheivements in recognition of the hard work produced by the children and the staff.

Well done Roman Road!

Last night, the school team played Falla Park at home in a league match. Even though the pitch conditions were difficult, the team ended the match with an excellent 6-1 win.
Josh Archibald continued his excellent scoring run with another four goals, making his haul ten in the last three matches. The other two were scored by Andrew Oliver whose strength was a problem for the spirited hardworking Falla team all match.
It was pleasing that the team varied the style of play due to the long grass and scored three headed goals as well as being unlucky when a header from Joe Hunter did not properly cross the line.

This week in Year One we have been looking at symmetry. It is a very hard subject but Mrs Inkster thinks we are fantastic at it.

First we began by taking lots of paper squares and rectangles. We experimented by folding the paper in half lots of different ways. When we had folded it, we opened it up and drew a line down the fold. Then, with our partners we looked very carefully and asked two questions:

1. Were they the same size?
2. Were they the same shape?

If they were this means that they were symmetrical.
We then used lots of other different shapes to see if they were symmetrical. We found that some shapes had lots of lines of symmetry but others didn't have any.

We extended this work by painting and cutting symmetrical pictures. We folded our paper in half and then painted on one side of the paper. Folded the paper again and pressed hard so the image would print. This created a symmetrical picture.

More tricky was cutting a symmetrical picture. Again we had to fold the paper in half and then remember to cut through both sheets of paper at the same time. Some of us created lots of confetti at first but then we soon got the hang of it.

We are now officially experts on symmetrical shapes and pictures.

To link in with our topic of travel and places around the world we have made our role play area into a travel agents and airport.

We have sorted all the travel brochures into the different destinations we might like to visit. Then you can get yourself a booking form and with the travel agents help, they will book your holiday. Tickets for the plane, train , ferry or coach are issed straight away so there is no hanging about for the post. Passports can also be issued here.

If you don't fancy a long holiday you can always book a day trip, there are many places on offer like the war museum, natural history museum, boating trips and many more.

Please remember before entering the airport to have all your luggage clearly labelled as it will be checked by security. It then makes it's way along our conveyor belt and onto the plane. Don't forget to get your passport stamped. Then, take a seat in our departure lounge and read all about Barnaby Bear in one of our books.

If you have time you can always fill in a postcard and post it in the post box or alternatively you can admire the fantastic chalk pictures we created using only half a picture from a holiday destination.

Sounds exciting doesn't it! We love it!
