Spaghetti and Marshmallow Structures

Year 5 worked on a project to explore what happens with structures when they are being built together with what is needed to keep them strong and sturdy.

We used spaghetti and marshmallows to produce a structure which stood up. The best group was the one who thought out how re-enforce weak points as well as holding the weight from above.

The groups found the spaghetti was very brittle meaning it had to be handled carefully. One wrong move sometimes meant the collapse of their structure. This enabled them to see where weak points were. Too much marshmallow in a certain place gave too much weight.

A lot was learnt with some fun and mess added in for good measure!!
