We Know All About Symmetry

This week in Year One we have been looking at symmetry. It is a very hard subject but Mrs Inkster thinks we are fantastic at it.

First we began by taking lots of paper squares and rectangles. We experimented by folding the paper in half lots of different ways. When we had folded it, we opened it up and drew a line down the fold. Then, with our partners we looked very carefully and asked two questions:

1. Were they the same size?
2. Were they the same shape?

If they were this means that they were symmetrical.
We then used lots of other different shapes to see if they were symmetrical. We found that some shapes had lots of lines of symmetry but others didn't have any.

We extended this work by painting and cutting symmertical pictures. We folded our paper in half and then painted on one side of the paper. Folded the paper again and pressed hard so the image would print. This created a symmetrical picture.

More tricky was cutting a symmetrical picture. Again we had to fold the paper in half and then remember to cut through both sheets of paper at the same time. Some of us created lots of confetti at first but then we soon got the hang of it.

We are now officially experts on symmetrical shapes and pictures.

Photos coming soon.
